OCCTH 324

OCCTH 524
LEVEL I FIELDWORK
*1.5 Credits
4wks full time, 37.5hrs/wk, minimum of 150 hrs

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Practical experience that integrates theory and practice together with fall courses.  The goal and learning objectives are oriented to the performance of basic OT skills.  The student is expected to participate in level appropriate tasks; Observation alone does not fulfill the requirements.

Prerequisite: attendance at Fieldwork Information Session in the fall.

GOAL STATEMENT

This Level I fieldwork experience will provide students with the opportunity to discover their own strengths and weaknesses, to discover information and to discuss the role of occupational therapists. This process allows students to apply academic concepts and professional skills in a practical setting with maximum supervision.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this placement students will be able to:

1. Practice Knowledge

-          apply the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance process and a model of practice to specific clients

2. Clinical Reasoning

-          demonstrate good judgment in the context of clients

3.  Facilitating Change

-          participate in assessment and intervention with clients

-          describe the role of the OT and other team members within the setting

4. Professional Interactions

-          demonstrate ethical and safe practice

-          demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with others

5. Communication

-          communicate with clients and colleagues in a professional and effective manner

6. Professional Development

-          demonstrate values of the profession

7. Performance Management

CASELOAD
Establishes a therapeutic relationship with a minimum of 3 clients.

Students will be required to complete assignments for concurrent courses utilizing information obtained during fieldwork.  These assignments will be due in the second half of the course following fieldwork and will be marked by University faculty.

OCCTH 525

There are two placements for Level 2 fieldwork.
In addition to the 300 hours of fieldwork in this first level 2 placement, students will be expected to reflect on their fieldwork experience and to gather together any relevant information and material identified in Year 3 winter term.

Spring/Summer Session Year 3
6 wks full time, 37.5hr/wk, minimum 225 hrs

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Practical experience in approved facilities and community agencies.  Prerequisites:  Consent of Department, attendance at Professional Development Seminar and completion of OCCTH 524 and Year 3 academic courses.

GOAL STATEMENT
Students will actively participate in and apply academic concepts and professional skills in a practical setting with moderate supervision.  Students will pursue own learning and growth by addressing previously identified challenge areas, and practice communicating in a professional and appropriate manner.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this placement students will be able to:

1. Practice Knowledge

-          apply theoretical and academic knowledge from their first year to a practice setting

-          demonstrate knowledge of the parameters and values of the profession

2. Clinical Reasoning

-          demonstrate clinical reasoning, problem solving and good judgment in the context of clients.

3.  Facilitating Change

-          conduct assessments of clients with supervision

-          plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of a client’s program with supervision

4. Professional Interactions

-          practice in an ethical, legal and safe manner

-          demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with others

5. Communication

-          demonstrate appropriate verbal and non verbal communication with clients and coworkers and integrate constructive feedback

-          demonstrate appropriate written communication for the setting

-          communicate with clients and colleagues in a professional and effective manner

There are two placements for Level 3 fieldwork. During one of these placements an afternoon may be set aside for students to make an appointment with their U of A personal advisor or U of A ACCE to help with the integration of academic and clinical experiences. For those further afield, who because of distance cannot return to the University, a telephone conference may be arranged.

This Level 3 fieldwork experience is designed to provide students with an opportunity to consolidate their learning and to gain confidence and independence in the practice of occupational therapy. Students will be expected to perform with minimal supervision.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this placement students will be able to:

GOAL STATEMENT
This final Level 3 fieldwork experience is designed to provide students with an opportunity to consolidate their learning, to gain confidence and independence and to refine skills in the practice of occupational therapy. They are expected to perform with minimal supervision close to the level of a graduate entry-level therapist.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course students must be able to:
1.  display knowledge, skills and attitudes of an entry-level new graduate (as identified by the CAOT profile)
2.  maintain and develop skills achieved in OCCTH 324, 328, 428, 433
3.  apply professional knowledge, skills and values and engage in professional activities
4.  refine clinical/professional reasoning and problem solving
5.  develop ability to assess clients and plan, implement and evaluate all aspects of program in different settings with increasing independence
6.  practice in an ethical, legal and safe manner
7.  communicate appropriately and integrate feedback
8.  demonstrate self-assessment and self-directed learning
9.  demonstrate independent work skills, time management, organization and prioritization

CASELOAD
By end of placement, be able to plan and deliver services for at least 75% of a therapist’s caseload in a timely, competent and safe manner with minimal supervision.

In addition to the 187.5 hours of fieldwork, students will be expected to reflect on their fieldwork experience, to continue to gather together relevant information for their professional practice portfolio as a basis for their last fieldwork experience.

This fieldwork experience is designed to provide students with an opportunity to consolidate their learning and to gain confidence in the practice of occupational therapy. Students will be expected to perform with minimum supervision. This fieldwork is also designed so that students may consult with clinical colleagues in the preparation of an assignment for the dissemination of information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course students must be able to:
1.  actively pursue own learning and growth by addressing previously identified challenge areas
2.  plan and deliver services for one-half of a caseload independently
3.  demonstrate the use of research-based information to support practice                                                                
4.  demonstrate ability to provide a concise, focused personal research project summary

This fieldwork experience is designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain confidence and independence in occupational therapy and to refine their skills before graduation. They will be expected to perform close to the level of a new graduate with minimal supervision. It is also designed for students to consult with clinical colleagues in the preparation of an assignment for the dissemination of information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course students must be able to:
1.  manage, independently, a caseload expected of an entry-level new graduate
2.  demonstrate the use of research-based information to support practice
3.  demonstrate ability to provide a concise, focused personal research project summary

Special Fieldwork

OCCTH 413 is a course designed to allow undergraduates to pursue the practical application of occupational therapy techniques in specialized settings. This course is extra to the requirements of the BScOT degree, and may not be used for credit as an elective or to replace other fieldwork courses. For more information, students should contact the ACCE.
